Creature baits resemble small crustaceans, a staple food source of ballan wrasse.
When using creature baits, work them really slowly with a combination of small flicks followed by a pause for several seconds, ensuring that they stay on or very near to the bottom. The pause is very important as you want the claws to rear up into the defence position once the bait is static, as wrasse will often strike once the lure is stationary. My favoured rig is the Texas, using a glass bead in-between the weight and the hook, which generates a clicking sound as the weight strikes the bead against the hook.

Cover all the ground out to sea as well as working the creatures slowly through any flooding gullies.
Ensure you work the baits all the way back, as quite often wrasse will be patrolling very close in, often along the edge of the rock you are stood on.

Wrasse generally favour dark, natural colours such as black, red and brown, although carrying a few alternate colours such as purple, blue and green can be beneficial as a simple change of colour can trigger a strike.
