The majority of my larger wrasse captures, (I consider 4lb plus larger wrasse), have come from gullies. Some of these gullies are only 1m wide and can be even shallower than that, but that doesn’t deter wrasse from visiting them to feed.
These areas can be sheltered from the elements such as winds and swells plus they can offer the fish sanctuary from predators such as seals.
Don’t worry if the gulley is really snaggy, I’ve taken 5lb plus wrasse from tiny holes in-between boulders the size of a dustbin lid by dropping small lures down on the Texas rig and vertical jigging the baits.
Quite often, with wrasse just visiting gullies, they wont necessarily have their heads down feeding but will swim through a gulley looking around. For this reason, I’ll use a smaller lure, such as the 85mm Slim Stick with a lighter weight and let it waft around rather than pinning it to the bottom, attracting cruising fish.
