A question that I’m often asked is ‘what type of rod do I need for wrasse fishing with lures’?
There’s a vast range of lure rods available in different lengths, casting weights and actions.

If you choose a rod with a low end casting weight of say 2-10g, you’ll never stop a powerful diving wrasse, the fish will be in the rough stuff and snag you up before you’ve even properly set the hook.
Go the other way to something like 25-50g and you’ll never cast out the light lures required, you won’t have any sensitivity and there’s just no fun in playing fish on such a powerful rod.
Opt for a rod with a fast or extra fast action, something between 7’ and 9’ in length and has a casting weight of between 8g and 35g.

One rod I can highly recommend, due to my own experience, is the Westin W2 Powerteez 7-28g, 8’4” extra fast action rod.

With these rods being extra fast action, they are really sensitive, meaning I can feel exactly what’s happening below the surface, from pulling through kelp, bouncing over a boulder to even the slightest of wrasse hits.

This rod is able to cast light lures effortlessly, is very sensitive but also has enough backbone to stop any hard diving wrasse.

Nice arrival mate. Out of of interest what reel have you paired the rod with?
Thanks for the comment.
I’ve paired this rod with a Hart Ishod 2000 reel.
It’ll be fine with a 3000 or 4000 size though.
