I’m often asked (generally by holidaymakers), where to go and try to catch a few ballan wrasse whilst they’re on holiday. I’ll never direct people onto the rocks. It’s not that I want to keep marks secret, but more so for the safety aspect of things such as swells and filling gullies that people may not be aware of.
A safe and easy accessible place to target wrasse though is Mevagissey. There’s plenty of parking in the village, which is then followed by a brief 4 or 5 minute walk. When walking towards the harbour keep left, walk past the harbour master’s office until you arrive at a wall which is followed by some steps which lead to a large concrete area with black railings.
The areas marked with green are all good areas to fish, with the red spots indicating some big underwater boulders which can cause problems and are best avoided.
A drop net is essential for landing any larger fish that you’ll hopefully hook.
There’s also plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs as well as little gift shops.
