HIGH OR LOW TIDE?

I’m often asked which state of tide is best for targeting wrasse.

The answer to this question is simple. It all depends on the mark.

Some of my spots fish better on low, some on high, some on mid-tide etc.

If you’re targeting a new mark or are newcomers to wrasse fishing, the advice I give to everybody is to try to fish the area on low tide (unless it’s so low it dries up). Don’t worry if it’s shallow, I’ve caught wrasse in depths as low as 3’.

The other good reason to try on low is that generally more spots are accessible so obviously you can cover more ground. Just be aware of what’s happening behind you, the last thing you want is to get your retreat from a rock cut off by the tide.

I also like flooding tides too, normally 2 hours after low on my areas, as this is generally when the gullies start to fill, resulting in wrasse visiting to feed.

TIP: Even if you aren’t fishing, try to get to a new area on low for a look and take pictures of the mark, so if you have to fish on high, you’ll be able to look at the photos and have an idea of what your fishing over / amongst.
