I’m often asked how to rig a soft plastic lure weedless. Although it may look a little complicated to some, especially non-lure anglers, once you’ve done it a few times it is really very simple.
The first thing to do is to take your soft plastic, (I’ve used a senko here but this method applies to all soft plastics) and simply hook it through the end of the lure.
Now, thread the lure along the hook, up to the bend before the eye.
Once here, rotate the hook and pull it up to the eye. The hook should now lay flat along the lure.
You now need to insert the hook through the lure.
I hold the lure with my finger and thumb which indicates where the hook should sit once rigged.
It’s now a case of inserting the hook point against my thumb and bring it out next to my finger.
Now, pull the lure down the hook bend and push the top of the lure up to the hook eye if it has pulled down.
The final part, which is critical, is to just nick the hook point into the top of the lure to ensure that it’s weedless.
You can now fish this rig through kelp and around boulders with minimal risk of snagging up.
Once a fish hits and bites down, the hook point will come out of the lure and give you a good hook set

Hi mate I’ve seen your posts in the Cornwall fishing group on Facebook and thought I’d try and get some advise, my boy has been interested in fishing for a while and on his birthday in august I got him a rod and all for us to go fishing, not long after that I also got the bug and picked up a rod for myself, we’ve been to pendennis point a few times, pra sands, Prussia cove, coverack, porthkidney and gunwallow and blanked on all of them, we try to fish at high tide but sometimes miss it, we’ve lost quite a lot of lures to snags but I know that’s all part of it and will give us experience, I’m worried that all these non successful trips are going to ruin his passion for fishing as he’s been enjoying it so much, it’s nice to get him away from the Xbox and see his face light up when he casts a long one out, he’s boarderline ADHD and fishing seems to calm him down, I’ve watched a lot of videos on YouTube and Tik Tok but have seen your posts a lot and thought I’d just ask, have you got any tips? I know giving away marks is a no no and I get that but even if it’s just one fish that we catch I think it’ll definitely boost his confidence and give him and me a boost to get out and get more, we’re currently using line we got with his rod not sure if it’s mono or not and we’ve recently been using fluorocarbon as a leader, and lures from Amazon, Temu and some tackle shop bought ones too, any advice would be greatly appreciated no matter how big or small.
Hi mate, thanks for the comment. I’ve replied to you via email.
